Six people are ill following a "serious accident" during a clinical trial at a hospital in Rennes, western France, the country's health ministry said in a statement.

The statement confirms an earlier report by Info TF1, which said one of the people affected is brain dead.

All six volunteers had been in good health prior to beginning the trial for the unidentified orally-consumed drug. The most seriously ill person is in a coma in intensive care, the ministry said.

The test was to ascertain the "safety, tolerability and pharmacological profiles" of the drug, which is "being developed by a European laboratory," the statement said.

Trials of the drug have now been suspended.

The French Agency for the Safety of Health Products (MSNA) will conduct a technical inspection of the laboratory, and health minister Marisol Touraine is expected onsite later Friday.
