A strong magnitude-6.4 earthquake struck southern Taiwan early Saturday, causing buildings to collapse and sparking fears of casualties.
The earthquake struck 14 miles northeast of Pingtung City at 3:57 a.m. local time, at a depth of 6.2 miles, the USGS reported.
Photos and videos posted on social media showed at least one collapsed building in Tainan, a large city on Taiwan's southwest coast, and rescuers searching for survivors.
Reuters reported a residential building had collapsed in the quake, among others. Taiwan's China Post newspaper also reported that more than one building collapsed.
The city government had also set up an emergency response center, the newspaper said.
