Dozens of people are believed to have died in the attack in the capital's Sadr City neighborhood, with many more injured, although no firm death count has been provided by authorities.

Estimates on the number of dead from police and medical officials range from 45 to as high as 64, with some reports suggesting it will rise further. Many of those killed include women and children, the BBC reported.

In February, the group carried out twin attacks on another market in Sadr City following the death of an influential cleric, which killed more than 70 people.
Wednesday's attack is the only bombing of a similar scale to hit the Iraqi capital in recent months.
