Barack Obama Sr. had hoped to graduate from Harvard University with a Ph.D. in economics, but he struggled there academically in his first year. He graduated with a master's degree. The 1963 letter is one of many documents discovered by an archivist at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem.
