Few details were immediately available, but according to Reuters Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said military action was being "taken without chain of command."
The Associated Press reported that Yildirim also said Turkey would not let any "initiative that would interrupt democracy."
Istanbul's Ataturk Airport — one of Europe's busiest and the scene of a terrorist attack in June — was reportedly closed late Friday night.
