At least 10 people were killed in an explosion at a marketplace in Davao City, Philippines, late Friday night, according to a government official.
An additional 60 people were reported injured by the blast, according to a statement from presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella. He said the cause of the blast is "still unverified."
"While no one has yet claimed responsibility it is best that the populace refrain from reckless speculation and avoid crowded places," he said. "There is no cause for alarm, but it is wise to be cautious.
Davao City, located on the southern island of Mindanao, is home to Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. He was not present when the blast took place, Reuters reported.
Davao police officers who specialize in explosives are investigating the scene and have not yet confirmed the cause of the explosion, according to CNN Philippines.
People nearby told CNN Philippines that they heard a loud noise, followed by smoke, around 11 p.m. local time.
Ambulances and firetrucks soon arrived at the scene to treat the victims.
In a statement, Davao City Vice Mayor and son of the president Paolo Duterte assured the public that city officials "are on top of this incident."
"Right now, we cannot yet give a definite answer as to who is behind this as we are also trying to determine what really exploded," he added.
